We're moving!

Postby atomtengeralattjaro » Fri May 04, 2018 3:46 am

We're moving!

Hey everyone,
philtom, the admin of asdf.com has decided to shut down the forum on May 25th, citing personal reasons, other commitments, compounded by an impending EU data protection law that would require extra effort from him.
We are very grateful that he has hosted this place for our little community for 11 years.
The asdf.com website will stay as it is, but the forum will move to a new domain where I'll host it. On the upside, this will mean new forum software version. Other than that, nothing should change, we will import a backup of the forum data.

What should the new domain name be? Please choose one from the poll, or make a suggestion. Keep in mind that some domain names are more expensive than others, not everything is available, and *.asdf.com is already taken.

You can check domain availability and prices at many places, like https://tld-list.com/

Out of these options I like the first one the best.

I'll say it here as well, thank you Philtom for hosting this wonderful forum for the last 11 years.

Sad news, but on the bright side this will hopefully mean some upgrades to the forum, which I am excited for.

Also, I haven't read up on it, but what will GDPR mean for us?

I'll try to wrap my head around it a bit more, but from what I can tell so far:
  • the biggest thing is properly encrypting passwords, which this phpbb version may or may not do right (it may use an outdated hashing algorithm), but the newer versions are definitely OK.
  • user consent to storing data has to be very clear and explicit (need to add a special terms of service / privacy policy thingy that users have to explicitly agree to, and it should be simple and easy to understand [even though the law itself isn't!])
  • we have to provide the right to be forgotten:
If the user wants their account deleted, we have to ask them if they want all of their posts to remain or not. If not, that's easy, phpbb has an option to delete the user and delete all of their posts at the same time. But if they are OK with the posts remaining, we still might have to remove the username from those posts (from what I gathered, GDPR says we have to provide that option), and phpbb doesn't directly allow that (if you delete user and retain posts, the posts will show the original username). So in this case before deleting, we first have to rename the user to something like "Anonymous047" and THEN delete the user. This way their posts remain but the username isn't associated with them anymore. Of course their username can still be found out if some of the other posts contain it, but that probably doesn't matter... there is no "right to never be quoted" thankfully.
  • this site wrote:organisations with fewer than 250 employees are not required to maintain a record of processing activities under its responsibility, unless “the processing it carries out is likely to result in a risk to the rights and freedoms of data subjects, the processing is not occasional, or the processing includes special categories of data […]

I'm not sure what this means. But it also says:
To fall within the remit of the GDPR, the processing has to be part of an “enterprise”. Article 4(18) of the Regulation defines this as any legal entity that’s engaged in economic activity.

    But overall,
  • I highly doubt that small non-commercial message boards like ours will ever risk facing legal action, even in the case of an unlikely breach. There is just no way anyone is going to police this on such a deep level. So I think we'll be OK.
If I find out anything more, I'll post about it.

Although the option "asdf dash forums" would be fun, in my opinion,
I voted for the option without a dash, because the dash might be hard to ind on some keyboard locations, and might be difficult for some people to type it.
Just one small remark on the option - I think that in "ASDF forum", the word "forum" should be in singular, rather than in plural, because it is just one bulletin, according to the definition on "forum", simply it has multiple sections.

Congratulations and good luck with hosting the heir of the ASDF forum! :)

In relation to this, will the new forum contain all threads and posts that we have made on the authentic ASDF forum?

And will our profiles contain information about the distribution of our posts into sections and threads?

I respect the policy of EU for multiple reasons, and I like the fact that Bulgaria is a member state of the European Union. :)

While I also like the policy, it can kill businesses and other organizations, example: http://forums.asdf.com

As with all things EU related, the intention is good, while the execution is a hit-or-miss.

I'm not entirely sure how the import process will work out, but ideally yes, everything should look the same just with a slightly different visual design. We'll see.

I'm so glad that I'm not in one of my month-or-more breaks from the forums...

Will the original URL redirect to the new site, at least for a while?

First off, I find it amazing that this little bit of InterWeb randomness has lasted 11 years.

Do we maybe want to entertain a .org extension since I assume the effort will be non-profit?

asdf.edu is also available.

And I am happy to contribute $$$ to cover the cost of the domain registration, if needed.

It does. I'm not sure what the Association of Synchronous Data Formats would think.
asdf.xyz is also available, but the letters xyz are not sequential on any keyboard :( There is asdf.sd and asdf.cv but both are really expensive (65-70 usd/year).
There is asdf.win, asdf.cool and asdf.lol, but aren't these kind of tacky?
maybe asdf.place?
There's asdf.cx, CX gamer would love that...
asdf.io is taken, it apparently sells mechanical keyboards...
We could form the esteemed ASDF Institute, and register asdf.institute
should I make a new poll? any other domain suggestions? While domains can be changed and then redirected, it would incur additional costs to do so. Philtom did say he'd potentially forward forums.asdf.com to the new domain and we definitely don't want to ask him to change the redirect once he's done so.

I think we're still going to be in the spirit of asdf.com, just not affiliated. So I'm still partial to asdfforums.com or one of the dash variants, but I'm not sure. Opinions please!

I'm more partial to asdfforums.com, though I'm not fuzzy about the top-level domain I think keeping it simple with .com is probably for the better.
