well when you learn to build off bad experiences that's good, I guess.

Originally or now? Now it's mostly an excuse to dress up and party, and for your kids to go up to people and ask for candy.

It originally had something to do with celebrating the dead (ancestors, etc.), I believe.

My youngest brother committed suicide in late October a little over a decade ago. His viewing (aka wake) was held on Halloween, so this time of year brings a lot of mixed emotions.

I feel you, I'm really sorry. :( My mom passed away 10/27 and her funeral was also held on Halloween. I'll be thinking of you!

It's strange how did it get there.

We kinda also have halloween here now, but it's basically just globalization. But it's still the day of the dead officially. Mostly people going to cemeteries cleaning up the graves of their dead. Putting more dead flowers on.

Edit: Oh, and by the way we have the dress-up-as-something fun times around february, "scaring the winter away".

It apparently also has something to do with an ancient Celtic festival that celebrated the end of harvesting season. It apparently also involved dressing up and going door to door for snacks (This was when chocolate was still limited to the new world only, so the snacks were apples and nuts and such).

We just had the costume contest at work. The judges are deliberating. I'm not going to win, but it was fun!

Why not?
Also, this is probably the slowest halloween night in recent memory. No trick-or-treaters at all.

Because I went as something really obscure, implemented as a piece of paper taped to my shirt.

The wife and kids came into work near the end and left with a bunch of candy from the in-office trick or treating.
